📜 February 23: On This Day in History

Santana serenades Santa Anna

Each of the following events happened on February 23. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna begins a siege of the Alamo, which is captured after 13 days with virtually all American defenders slain. The battle later becomes for Texans a symbol of heroic resistance, invoking the phrase “Remember the Alamo!”
  • B) Carlos Santana wins eight Grammy Awards for Supernatural, tying the record set by Michael Jackson. His music combines rock, jazz, blues, and Afro-Cuban rhythms with Latin sound.
  • C) A group of elementary-age children in Pittsburgh receive the first injections of the new polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk. Polio cases are later reduced by 99% worldwide following the vaccine’s introduction.
  • D) Speed skater Eric Heiden wins the 10,000-meter race at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY, setting a world record with his time and winning an unprecedented fifth individual gold medal at the Winter Games.

Hint: Santana won double the amount of Grammys as his placement in this game
