📜 February 24: On This Day in History

Image: Science Meets Faith

Each of the following events happened on February 24. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Pope Gregory XIII introduces a new “Gregorian” calendar based on a 365-day common year divided into 12 months of different lengths. His change overrides the Julian calendar, which had been the standard since 46 BCE.
  • B) The House of Representatives votes to convict President Andrew Johnson on 11 articles of impeachment, making him the first president to be impeached in US history.
  • C) US-led coalition forces launch a ground invasion of Kuwait after Iraq invaded and seized the country. By the end of the day, Iraq’s army has effectively folded, while Kuwait is liberated after just four days.
  • D) Supreme Court decides the landmark case of William Marbury v. James Madison, which confirms the legal principle of judicial review—or SCOTUS’ ability to limit Congress by declaring legislation unconstitutional—in America.

Hint: It takes two to have a lawsuit
