🤗 The Sweet Spotlight | | One house’s journey from sold to saved | Images: Jailynn Dickerson | When Jailynn Dickerson thinks about her childhood, one place comes to mind: her grandma’s house. Every holiday, every family gathering, every stretch when life got tough, it all happened there. For a few years, Jailynn and her mom even lived in the 900-square-foot home. - And no matter what changed in life, that house didn’t—Jailynn's grandmother, Susan Rilea, made sure of it.
- She went all out for every occasion, cooking and baking enough to fill the house and then some.
That changed three years ago, when Susan could no longer keep up with the home’s maintenance and had to sell. Jailynn was crushed, but made herself a promise: one day, she’d get it back. |
|
| Jailynn got to work. For three years, the now-21-year-old juggled three jobs, often logging 70+ hour weeks between Dunkin’, Aldi, and a tattoo parlor. Nearly every dollar went into savings, with the goal of one day bringing the house back into the family. And then, one day, it happened. While scrolling through listings, her grandma’s old home popped up. Within two days, Jailynn had scheduled a tour, and just a couple weeks later, she was closing on it. - She even managed to pull off the entire process without her grandma catching on.
- The surprise came in a now-viral video, where Jailynn drove Susan past what she called her “new place,” only for the realization to slowly set in that it was actually her old home.
Jailynn plans to move in over the next few weeks, tackling fresh paint and small repairs before hosting her first big gathering: a Fourth of July BBQ, just like the ones she grew up with. And this time around, her grandma will be right where she belongs. |

😇 Mindfulness Moments | | One minute to mindfulness | Practicing mindfulness doesn't need to take up much of your day; even just a few one-minute chunks can help establish the power of simple repetition. Let’s give it a try. This TIME article outlines the simple practice of 'Active Noticing,' a ~60-second mindfulness practice for when you need some grounding. A step by step guide: - Pause and take one slow breath, extending the exhale.
- Notice three things you can see, without labeling them as good or bad.
- Notice two physical sensations in your body (such as your feet on the floor or the weight of your body in a chair).
- End with a grounding statement: “This is what’s here right now.” Or: “This is what I notice right now.”
And that’s it! Give it a try now, and notice how different you feel after. Bonus points if you're able to complete this multiple times throughout your day. |

🏆 What’s Your Win? | | 🎺🎺🎺 Sound the trumpets | What’s Your Win is here. Welcome to the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good things happening right here within our DONUT community. Big or small, there’s always something to celebrate. Check out the wins we received this week! 📚 Dena O. from TN is supporting her hometown in a big way… - “This Saturday I will chair an event to raise money so our public librarians can write grants to us for items/events outside the scope of their budget. Every dollar will impact residents of my county and literacy.”
❤️ An anonymous reader from New England has come out stronger on the other side… - “This time last year (2025) I was barely crawling out of a long stretch of grief and depression. There had been multiple close-to-me losses over the previous 3 years, some big life changes, and biology (thank you menopause!) issues that created a "perfect storm" of mental health struggles. Spring and summer of 2025 were really low seasons for me and even though I started feeling better in the Fall and Winter, I sort-of worried about this upcoming year--wondering if I'd fall back into another mental health low-point again (hey, my thinking gets weird when it comes to my mental health haha). But I am very happy to report that all of the life changes I implemented these past 7-8 months (joining community groups, diving into amazing hobbies, and daily self-care) have me feeling like I am standing on solid ground again. I am actually looking forward to Spring and Summer this year! I have started a garden, joined a plein-air painting class, and will begin volunteering at our local summer-stock theater in a few weeks. I seriously didn't know if I'd ever feel okay again, let alone optimistic and hopeful! I hope my future-self remembers that I can get through hard times. I honestly think that if I can get through that stretch, I can get through anything."
😮 Another anonymous subscriber from AZ is a reminder of the power of good karma… - “I want to send a huge THANK YOU to a Good Samaritan. I truly hope this person reads The DONUT. I dropped my wallet at a Sam’s gas station in Phoenix. I thought I had picked up all the cards. It wasn’t til later I realized I was missing both mine & my husband's debit cards. I was so panicked & upset..crying hysterically would be an apt description. My husband went to the station, and someone had turned in the cards!!! My husband says it’s return-karma for all the secret good-deeds I do. And, I was wearing my ‘Human•Kind… Be Both’ tshirt. Coincidence?!”
