📜 May 7: On This Day in History | | Remember the Lusitania | Image: The Conversation | Each of the following events happened on May 7. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The British ocean liner Lusitania is torpedoed without warning by a German submarine, sinking into the Celtic Sea within 20 minutes. Over half of the 1,959 passengers and crew drowned, including 128 Americans, in an event widely considered the first spark towards America entering world war.
- B) Norway’s most famous painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, is recovered nearly three months after being stolen from a museum in Oslo. The painting was stolen in just 50 seconds during a break-in on the opening day of the nearby Winter Olympics.
- C) Seven chemical companies, including Dow and Monsanto, agree to pay $180M to thousands of US veterans exposed to the chemical herbicide Agent Orange during the Vietnam war.
- D) Manjiro, a 14-year-old considered America's first Japanese immigrant, arrives in the US by way of a whaling ship that rescued him and his shipwrecked fishing crew. Manjiro eventually returns to Japan, where he is named a samurai and works as a political emissary with the West.
Hint: The Lusitania suffered two total explosions |
