📜 June 18: On This Day in History | | Ride to the stars | Image: New York Times | Each of the following events happened on June 18. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The space shuttle Challenger launches on its second mission. On board the shuttle is Dr. Sally K. Ride, who becomes the first American woman to travel into space.
- B) President John Adams oversees the passage of the Naturalization Act, the first of four pieces of controversial legislation known together as the Alien and Sedition Acts. Strong political opposition to these acts would help Thomas Jefferson to win the presidency two years later.
- C) Napoleon Bonaparte suffers defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo in Belgium, bringing an end to the Napoleonic era of European history.
- D) Less than two hours into its dive to tour the wreckage of the Titanic, the deep-sea submersible Titan suffers a catastrophic implosion, killing all five passengers on board. Among the dead is Stockton Rush, founder and CEO of the company that built Titan and organized undersea tours.
Hint: The defeat at Waterloo led to Napoleon's second exile |
