Each of the following events happened on July 8. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) British pop band the Spice Girls releases their debut single, “Wannabe,” which helps propel them to international stardom and kick off a teen pop resurgence.
  • B) Vasco da Gama sails from Lisbon, Portugal, with a fleet of four vessels on a mission to open a sea route from western Europe to Asia. His endeavor would prove a success, opening up India to European trade/exploration and ushering in a new era in world history.
  • C) The Roswell Daily Record reports that soldiers at the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico have recovered the remains of a flying saucer that crashed on a local ranch. While the claim is quickly refuted by authorities, the Roswell incident becomes the center of a flying saucer mania that would grip the nation.
  • D) Venus Williams wins her first Wimbledon singles championship. Her victory over defending champion, Lindsay Davenport, made Williams the first Black female Wimbledon champion since Althea Gibson won back-to-back titles

Hint: Besides “Wannabe,” the Spice Girls’ debut album had 3 other chart-topping hits
