• A) President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. He also issues an order for an American flag featuring 50 stars arranged in staggered rows: five six-star rows and four five-star rows.
• B) Althea Gibson is accepted into the United States Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship in New York, making her the first African American player to compete in a US national tennis competition.
• C) Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is stolen from the Louvre by Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian housepainter and handyman, and two accomplices. The painting wasn’t found for two years, during which its story traveled ’round the world and helped take the Mona Lisa from relative obscurity to one of the world’s most famous artworks.
• D) The Equal Educational Opportunities Act is enacted. The new law bars states from discriminating against students based on gender, race, color, or nationality and requires public schools to provide for students who don't speak English.
