In one of the most iconic speeches in US history, delivered to 250,000+ civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, King calls for civil and economic rights for Black citizens and an end to legalized racism.
- B) Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorce. After four years of separation, Charles, Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne, and his wife, Princess Diana, formally divorce.
- C) Pepsi first gets its name. Pharmacist Caleb Bradham begins marketing his popular “Brad’s Drink” as Pepsi-Cola, with the catchy rebranding helping transform a hometown favorite into one of the world’s most recognizable soft drinks. PepsiCo, Inc. would eventually become one of the largest food and beverage companies.
- D) The Killers, starring Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster in his breakthrough role, premieres in New York City. The film, based on an Ernest Hemingway short story, would become a film noir classic.
