New Apple CarPlay just dropped

CarPlay Ultra is here, and it’s taking over more than just the aux cord. The new software, unveiled yesterday, builds on the current capabilities of Apple CarPlay and integrates more deeply with car systems.

Some features:

• Multiple screens: CarPlay Ultra will display information on all of the driver’s screens for the first time, including the instrument cluster in front of the wheel.
• Car connection: The new system can sync to the car’s internal systems, displaying data from the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, tire pressure, and more.
• *Vibes*: Users will also be able to personalize the screens with unique colors and wallpapers.

Look, but you can’t yet touch: CarPlay Ultra will initially cater to those with a taste for British luxury and six-plus figures to blow—the platform is only available in new Aston Martins, though it’s expected to launch for other brands such as Hyundai, Kia, Porsche, and Genesis in the coming months.

Not all automakers are buddying up to Apple. Some major brands, including GM, Rivian, and Tesla, are hesitant to give up the cockpit, opting to build their own in-house infotainment systems instead.
