Senators agree in principle on bipartisan gun control

๐Ÿ“ A bipartisan group of 20 senators announced a proposed framework for new gun safety legislation yesterday.

  • The agreement is โ€œon principles, not legislative text,โ€ per the WSJ, which also said the new measure would represent the most expansive gun control law since a 1994 assault weapons ban.
  • Among other things, the proposed framework funds programs for mental health and school security, provides incentives for states to implement โ€œred-flagโ€ laws, and further restricts illegal gun sales such as straw purchasing.
  • The bipartisan agreement included the signatures of ten Republican senators, signaling that it could ultimately reach the 60-vote threshold needed to pass in the evenly-divided Senate.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Looking ahead... Any potential legislation would also need to be adopted by the Democratic-led House, which passed its own set of gun control measures last week (though they arenโ€™t expected to be considered in the Senate).

  • House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) said yesterday that she would likely back any Senate-approved measure, even if it fell short of what she and other Dems are seeking.
