🦁 You gotta be lion-ing... As lions slowly dwindle in numbers around the world, the team at nonprofit Lion Landscapes is recruiting local Tanzanians to help protect the beasts.

  • It's traditional in the Barabaig tribe to hunt lions when they pose a threat to the community or when a man comes of age.
  • Lion Landscapes is working to change the narrative however, recruiting a highly skilled team of men to become "Lion Defenders," tracking the animals' location in relation to the tribe each day.

💬 What they're saying: “The Lion Defenders program has been built around the idea of what it really means to be a warrior,” says Amy Dickman, director of the University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit and CEO of Lion Landscapes. “To be a warrior is to protect your community, to be someone they can rely on, to be someone with high status.”
