💐 Will you be my flower grandad?

What's sweeter than the relationship a granddad can have with his granddaughter? 

🥲 You're gonna want to grab the tissues for this one... When Rachel Powell got engaged in 2021, she knew she wanted her grandpa Bert Edlin to be a part of her special day. 

However, only a few months after the engagement, Bert suffered from a life-threatening fall that caused him to be bed-bound for months. The 93-year-old had to be resuscitated in the hospital and ended up needing a full tracheotomy. Doctors said he would never walk or talk again.  

🫶 Yes, but... Throughout his time in the hospital and the grueling physical therapy afterwards, Rachel never gave up on Bert's ability to make a full recovery.

• "I believed he would get better," she said. "And it was during that when I said I wanted to honour him and make him feel really special." 
• That's when she had the idea of asking Bert to be a part of her wedding day in a perfect position; she wanted her granddad to be her flower boy. 
• While Bert still couldn't speak at the time of her asking him to be a part of the ceremony, he wrote his response down on paper. All it said was: "I will make it to your wedding."

Bert spent the next year recovering from his injuries, as the wedding got closer and closer. The recovery culminated last month, when the now 95-year-old walked down the aisle in front of his granddaughter as the official "flower granddad," scattering petals as he went. 

• When asked about her grandfather, Rachel shared. "He makes everyone so happy – he is always the first on the dance floor... He loves to make people laugh and smile." 

And as for Bert? He is now walking and talking again 16-months after his life threatening fall. 

• "Believe anything is possible," the grandfather advised. "I can't believe I got to watch my granddaughter get married. You see, I am still here, I got to make the wedding – that is the main thing."
