Sisters Samantha Malczewski and Mia Carter love going to college together. The students – a sophomore and freshman, respectively – even share a dorm room together at Carthage College, bringing a familiar sense of home and family to campus.

This year, however, that sense of home and family is even stronger – because their mom and grandma are attending school with them.

🤔 That's right. For the first time in Carthage College's history, three generations of the same family is enrolled at the same time.

  • The girls' mom, Amy Malczewski, and grandmother, Christy Schwan, had been speaking of going to grad school for awhile.
  • After Christy lost her mother earlier this year, the 71-year-old decided it was finally time to stop talking and start doing. Both are pursuing degrees in business and design and innovation.

😮 Share a fun fact... Sophomore nursing student Samantha said she's already started receiving the million dollar question around campus: "does your grandma go here?"

  • “And I’m like, ‘She does go here!’... It’s been a good icebreaker.”

Mom Amy has worked at Carthage College for 22 years, and has always wanted to enroll as a student. Seeing both of her girls love their schooling experience made her finally bite the bullet and go for it.

  • "I have a little time now. I'm like, you know what, I should get that graduate degree I've always wanted," she shared. The mom of five is (self-proclaimed) "Carthage College's biggest fan."

But the experience is about more than just completing their degrees. The women are grateful for this special chapter and bond it's creating between the four of them.

"My advice to anybody is just, life is so short and if there's something that you're interested in, and maybe you're doubting yourself a little bit, put that doubt aside and just go for it," Amy shared with Good Morning America. "Especially if you have somebody that can do it with you, I think it makes it even sweeter, right? Having these experiences with my mom is going to be something I'm going to remember for the rest of my life. Seeing my daughters on campus? You know, I love it."
