🐐 A second chance

The scimitar-horned oryx was declared extinct in the wild in 2000.

Some antelopes were still alive in captivity, however, and their "extinction" label was a loss that breeders, zookeepers, and governments have been working to reverse.

Success, achieved. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) just removed the oryx from its extinct in the wild list and placed it on the endangered list – the first time they have ever moved a species in reverse order.

🐐 Behind the change: The effort to repopulate the animals took place on the Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve in Chad. There are now around 160 scimitar-horned oryx living in the wild, with the population continuing to grow.
