🦅 Making a comeback

You're looking at a white stork, a previously extinct-in-the-wild species with an impressive wing span and unique black wing feathers.

🪶 Not just any bird... White storks used to be common in and around the UK, but went nearly extinct ~600 years ago. The only known living white storks were kept in zoos and animal sanctuaries until recently, when a local conservation project began reintroducing them to the wild.

  • It appears the project is already bearing fruit, with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust recently spotting this healthy white stork flying over the UK.
  • “It was fantastic to witness it circling overhead with its incredible wing span," said observer, Darren Banks. "It was a great sign to see one this far north!"
