Love at a snail's pace

Tuesday, Sep 2

Images: Giselle Clarkson

Ned, a rare New Zealand snail, has a problem most of us can relate to—he just wants to find someone to love. Trouble is, his species is so rare that he could possibly be the last of his kind. Ned’s shell spirals to the left rather than the traditional snail spiral to the right, a 1 in ~40,000 occurrence.

Put it on Netflix: New Zealanders are stepping in as the world’s most-determined matchmakers, scouring remote forests in hopes of finding Ned the Perfect Match before it’s too late.

The stakes are high: No mate = even less of a future for the species. But for now, Ned lives in a climate-controlled tank, eating his greens and waiting on a first date that may never come.
