Payton Obert is the ultimate example of turning lemons into lemonade.
When she was just 18 months old, she received a stuffed bear from a charity supporting hospitalized children. The cuddly gift brought her comfort during a difficult time, and while she may have been too young to understand the gesture, its impact would stick with her for years to come.
Fast-forward to 2018, and eight-year-old Payton decided it was time to pay that kindness forward. Armed with some lemonade, a table, and a whole lot of determination, she set up shop outside her Cincinnati home, hoping to raise enough money to buy toys for other children in hospitals.
Her first lemonade stand brought in $768—not too shabby for a kid selling cups of lemonade. But Payton was just getting started.

She was back at it the following year, and raised ~10x as much money. Soon, other kids wanted in on the action and set up their own lemonade stands with the same goal.
The impact goes beyond lemonade. Payton's Lemonade Stand is now a full-blown nonprofit organization that provides toys, food, clothing, school supplies, and other necessities to children and families in need.
What began as one little girl's mission to make other kids smile has generated hundreds of thousands in charitable support over eight years. All because someone thought a little girl in the hospital could use a teddy bear.
