Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, ah come on please can you not?
That was the essential message from lawmakers yesterday during OpenAI CEO Sam Altmanās testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on privacy and technology.
āCongress failed to meet the moment on social media,ā Chair Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) said in his opening written remarks. How can we ensure, he may have continued, channeling the legendary UK band The Who, that we donāt get fooled again?
Altmanās answer was simple ā regulate, regulate, regulate. And that includes creating a legal framework that isnāt Section 230, the law that essentially indemnifies social media platforms from being held liable for the content on their platforms.
Hereās Altmanās three-point plan for what regulation might look like:
š¤ Looking ahead... Expect more regulation-focused AI conversations ā because much like gossip at a family reunion, the technology is spreading fast. OpenAIās ChatGPT crossed the 100 million user mark just two months after launching late last year. Meanwhile, Google, which has over 1 billion people using its services, recently announced plans to integrate its AI chatbot, Bard, into its suite of apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and more.
š Replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners like aspartame, stevia, saccharin, or sucralose does NOT help people lose weight in the long term, per a WHO advisory published yesterday that was based on a systematic review of a combined 283 scientific studies.
š°ļø Yesterday, California-based startup Vast announced a partnership with SpaceX to put the worldās first commercial space station, called Haven-1, in orbit by late 2025.
šš¤šŖ Now itās time for the highly-anticipated sequel: āSnakes on a Rocketship.ā Yesterday, NASA unveiled a new 16-foot-long snake robot that the space agency is sending to one of Saturnās 83 moons to search for extraterrestrial life.
