🇵🇰 Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled the government’s arrest of former PM Imran Khan was illegal. The Court ordered Khan to be released from police custody, saying his arrest on corruption charges two days prior was invalid because it occurred inside a court complex without the proper permissions. Khan’s initial arrest sparked nationwide protests that sometimes turned violent, with a combined ten deaths and 2,300 arrests reported on Tuesday and Wednesday.
🌎 The WHO declared an end to its global health emergency for mpox (formerly monkeypox). The announcement means the agency believes the crisis due to mpox – which spreads via direct contact with body fluids and causes flu-like symptoms in addition to pus-filled skin lesions – is now under control, with international funding and collaboration no longer necessary. Almost 90% fewer mpox cases were reported over the past three months compared with the same duration before that, WHO officials said.
🇬🇧 The Bank of England is no longer predicting a UK recession later this year, citing reasons that include stronger global growth and lower energy prices. That’s according to the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee, which voted yesterday to raise the UK’s baseline interest rate from 4.25% to 4.5%. Central bank officials also indicated a high likelihood of future interest-rate hikes aimed at dealing with nationwide inflation, which stood at 10.1% annually in March but is projected to reach 5.1% by the end of this year.
