🇨🇦🔥 Roughly two-thirds of the 46,000 residents in Canada’s Northwest Territories are being evacuated due to wildfires. More than 230 wildfires are currently burning across the Northwest Territories, forcing officials to order evacuations, including telling all 20,000 residents of the capital city Yellowknife to evacuate their homes. There are also 360+ wildfires currently burning in the neighboring province of British Columbia, where officials project conditions will worsen over the weekend. The fires burning in Canada are expected to lead to harmful air quality in US states near the border over the coming days.

🇦🇫 The Afghan Taliban government has effectively halted the operations of all political parties. In explaining the move, Taliban officials on Wednesday said political parties “have no justification in Islamic Sharia Law,” and claimed such groups have been the main factor causing turmoil in Afghanistan for decades. Since returning to power almost exactly two years ago, the Taliban has monopolized its control by giving all major government positions to its members and abolishing nearly all democratic institutions.

🇯🇵🇰🇷🇺🇸 The leaders of Japan and South Korea will be attending a trilateral summit with President Biden later today. The meeting at Camp David is aimed at improving relations between Japan and South Korea. The two countries have a bitter history in large part due to Japan’s occupation of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, during which many aspects of Korean culture were forcibly replaced with Japanese traditions. US officials say they hope to reach new agreements which deepen defense, technology, and economic cooperation between the three nations, and to also formalize the trilateral summit as an annual event.
