🎁 Democratic lawmakers are planning a series of events today to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.

📅 Quick recap: One year ago, a group of Trump supporters forced their way into the Capitol building and temporarily halted Congress' counting and certification of the 2020 Electoral College votes.

  • Four people involved in the riot died on January 6 – three from "medical emergencies," and a fourth who was shot by Capitol Police. In addition, four police officers who responded to the riot died by suicide in the following weeks and months.

🚨 The aftermath… Federal law enforcement agencies were soon tasked with finding and charging those responsible for what the FBI called an act of "domestic terrorism."

  • To date, more than 725 individuals have been arrested and charged with alleged crimes stemming from the events of January 6.
  • Prosecutors have secured ~165 guilty pleas, most of which were admissions to nonviolent misdemeanors carrying little or no jail time.

🏛️ On Capitol Hill: The Democrat-led House select committee investigating the riot has interviewed more than 300 witnesses and collected 35,000 pages of records thus far. These include texts, emails, and phone records from people close to Trump.

  • Separately, Senate investigators released a report in June outlining intelligence and communications failures in the lead-up to January 6, including warnings of violence that were largely ignored by top agency officials.

👁️ Looking ahead… The House committee's final report is expected sometime before the November midterms, with a possible interim report coming in the spring or summer according to the AP.

+While we're here: Former President Trump rescheduled a press conference planned for later today, opting to speak at a Jan. 15 rally instead.
