How do you think tech platforms should handle political content?

👍 Ensure it reaches as many people as possible (18%) – "I would much rather prefer that no political voices are silenced, rather than companies making sure all voices are silenced."

🚫 Institute a blanket ban (53%) – "Political messaging shouldn’t be advertised so much. Especially for minors who use Gmail for school purposes and are now bombarded with political campaigns they can’t even vote for."

  • "I am so done with slanted, negative tv ads. Let’s go back to mailing out postcards and small brochures to advertise a candidate’s position on social and political issues. I can then use my agency to read the information or toss it out, rather than having to sit thru nasty twisted commercials."
  • "If political content is completely banned from these platforms, no one will have to worry about if a certain company is focusing more on one party than the other. Things will be easier in the long run, especially since it might lead people to do their own research on candidates instead of listening to or seeing ads."
  • "I am SICK of seeing political ads everywhere! On tv, billboards, on social media, postcards in the mail, seems like every where I look it’s a political ad. It would be different if the ad was actually advertising something, but it just seems like all “ads” now are just bashing the other side, with no real concrete information. I don’t want to see it anymore."

⚖️ Something in the middle (29%) – "I think it should be up to the viewers to decide how they feel, and not be so easily swayed one way or the other. Take the time to really learn about candidates, propositions, etc. I also think it depends on the platform itself; is it relevant and/or appropriate to have the political content? What purpose does it serve? These are questions that should also be asked."

  • "I think certain platforms have more of a responsibility to highlight political content. For example; Twitter, Gmail, etc definitely should not ban political ads/outreach/accounts etc. But platforms like TikTok shouldn't be used (and abused) by politicians to push their agendas, regardless of which side they stand on."
