Do you agree with President Biden’s decision to forgive some federal student loans?

👍 Yes (40%) – "Student loans have often been predatory and in many cases people are only paying excessively large amounts towards inly the interest by design. Biden’s plan begins to take actions to address the flaws in this system and allow more movement of capital in society."

  • "I paid off all the student loans in my name (well over $100K worth) and yet I still agree with the decision. Literal children made the decision to borrow under predatory circumstances, not knowing the consequences and expecting no other way to finance their degrees, which are often necessary to earn a living in many parts of our country. The US Government didn't step in to stop these predatory practices initially - let's not stand in the way of the govt trying to set things right for people who have suffered."

👎 No (52%) – "Student loan debt is outrageous, but forgiving the loans outstanding won't help the issue. The solution lies in reducing the cost of education (higher education fees include paying the salaries of support staff that are not involved in the education of students ever) and limiting loans to all applicants. College loans should not be given to those getting degrees that will never result in a career where the applicant won't make enough to pay the amount of loan back in 7 years."

  • "The federal government needs to not get involved in certain things. The people who took out the loans knew they were going to have to pay them back, and now their loans are magically being erased. The citizens of this country have received enough handouts. We are in this inflation mess because the federal government keeps giving out money, making it so people don't have to repay what they borrowed, and now just out and out forgiving debt. This forgiving of debt is going to negatively impact education and the US citizens in ways that can't be predicted."
  • "If students have a student loan, that means they have furthered their education. They CHOSE to incur debt to further their education. Since smart enough to make this decision, I’ll assume they are also smart enough to get a job and pay off their debt. I made the same decision, and paid off my student debt. I didn’t expect anyone else to pay this debt for me."

🤷‍♀️ Unsure/other (8%) – "College tuition and debt are cartoonishly out of control. So I know without a doubt that something needs to be done; some reform needs to happen, some regulation needs to be instituted, and some kind of assistance needs to be offered to borrowers. But I'm just not sure that throwing $10k at each individual is going to improve their lives in a significant enough way that it helps to solve the problem. I'm open to being convinced though."
