All things considered, Elon Musk buying Twitter would have a ____ impact on society as a whole.

👍 A good impact (29%) – "I think society as a whole is a stretch, but as far a social media goes, Twitter is the one that most people use for news. There is no denying that SM companies skew hard left. As a centrist, I’d like to see more balance. It’s disingenuous that SM companies pretend that they censor fairly and it’s incredibly disturbing that a SM company would have the kind of power to decide what we can and cannot see."

  • "I think he will aim to restore free speech to the platform, which is the first principle (eg first amendment) that our country was established on. For generations, free speech has enabled the free exchange of ideas and the development of our uniquely successful society."
  • "Under its current leadership, Twitter has been censoring people for doing nothing except having unpopular opinions. I believe that Musk will do a better job than the people currently in charge."

👎 A bad impact (34%) – "He doesn’t think anyone should be censored, even if a person is spreading hatred and lies. This will further drive the wedge between an already, significantly fractured society."

  • "Musk originally was only "buying" Twitter in order to stir up controversy and increase his public standing. After realizing that backing out of the deal would have massive legal repercussions for him, Musk was forced to go through with the deal. The platform will likely become worse as Musk's conservative views encourage those on the extreme side of the political spectrum to return to the platform in the hopes that their previously banned major figures will be unbanned."
  • "Musk isn't looking out for the good of our country or individuals. I think he may let some banned people back on the platform (like Trump) which gives them an outlet to spread lies."

🙅‍♀️ No impact (18%) – "It doesn't seem like Twitter is such a powerful tool. Too many bots and upset users. Whether or not Musk puts money into it, Twitter will go on with the status quo – provided no intrusive policies are introduced."

🤷‍♀️ Unsure/other (19%) – "I'm not sure what impact it would have due to Musk not making his mind up on what he wants. But does the ownership of Twitter affect my day to day life... nope."
