In your opinion, what’s the best way for governments to handle Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day?

🇮🇹 Only celebrate Columbus Day or a theoretical Italian-American Pride Day (10%) – "Why are we changing history? Why can't we accept it for what it was and is and evolve from it? Why instead are we living in the present while trying to change the past?"

🪶 Only celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day (38%) – "We know Columbus was not a good person. I think switching the focus to celebrating Indigenous people and highlighting the mistakes of Columbus would be the right way to go. Italian Americans don't necessarily need the social cover they once did, but it may also be helpful to recognize that at in the past, European immigrants also suffered injustices."

  • "Even as an Italian-American I believe Columbus Day is a farce. Columbus was the epitome of a bumbling, oblivious white person that can't read the room - we should be remembering the people who were displaced, not the criminals who displaced them."
  • "I think recognizing Columbus Day, even as an Italian-American pride day, is indirectly giving praise to a horrible man who committed acts of atrocity against innocent people. There are other days that could be designated as an Italian-American pride day (St. Joseph's day, perhaps)."

📅 Celebrate both holidays simultaneously (18%) – "Everyone can choose what they want to celebrate, or one can choose not to celebrate either holiday at all. Both of the holidays seem important to different ethnic groups."

📅 📅 Celebrate both holidays on separate dates (16%) – "Celebrate both holidays separately because they celebrate different things. Columbus Day should be renamed to something more celebratory of Italian-American culture/ contributions to our nation and should celebrate those achievements. And Indigenous peoples day should be celebrated to draw attention to their great history and the role they played in our country’s development."

🙅‍♀️ Don't recognize either holiday (18%) – "The majority of American's don't celebrate these holidays for what they really mean. They are at best a day off and at worst an inconvenience because banks and/or government agencies are closed."
