👍 Yes (43%) – "The cost of tuition for state schools was set up to be affordable, but the federal government has failed to limit the rates to an affordable amount. Most borrower's will still have some debt to repay. Many borrowers who will not have any left to pay would never have paid it anyway and this will help them have a better credit rating and be better contributors to society. If a person qualified for pell grants, they did not have the family money to help pay for college and I see this as a more realistic amount of repayment expectations. Just consider the loan forgiveness as more grant money."
"In my generation, going to a 4-year university was touted as the ONLY option to get a good job. I feel like as a first generation college student, I was bamboozled into going to college even though I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I spend the first 2 years just figuring that out - what a waste of money. As an 18 year old, I listened to what I was told to do. Here I am 15 years later and still haven't put a dent in my principal. I don't have an issue with paying it back, buy why can't student loan interest be 0%?"
👎 No (44%) – "It isn’t forgiveness, it’s debt redistribution and refinancing. People will be paying more for years longer with blanket “forgiveness” than if they had just paid off their own debt at their own pace. Those in favor of this don’t seem to realize those dollars are still coming from somewhere (hint: it’s your paycheck). Instead of just paying for your own loans if you had any, you’re now going to be paying for everyone else’s."
"Coming from a low income family the only real option I had was to enter the work force right out of high school. To help take care of myself and my family that’s what I did. I didn’t want to burden myself further with debt and my family could take on those burdens for me either. Had I known that it would all be forgiven later on in life I would’ve. It’s completely unfair for all of us who didn’t make that decision."
🤷♀️ Unsure/other (13%) – "I think the income limits should be lower for forgiveness."
