π Yes (34%) β "When we only judge students on grades and test scores, we're not just measuring hard work and ability. We're also measuring how much money applicants' parents spent on private tutors, SAT prep courses, college admissions counselors, etc. Taking into account race and the history of oppression against certain races and ethnicities in this country, we also get a fuller picture of what applicants have had to overcome in order to be qualified enough to apply to a college."
π No (50%) β "Nothing about a person's skin color determines their ability to learn and succeed in a college setting. Letting in unqualified students is a disservice to those students, who would do better to gain the necessary skills before going to college, so that they can truly succeed on their own terms instead of being falsely propped up."
π€·ββοΈ Unsure/other (16%) β "I'm conflicted and feel like there's not a one-size-fits-all solution. I believe students should be accepted into college/awarded scholarship money based on their merit, not the color of their skin. However, white students often have greater access to better education/educational resources when in elementary, middle, and high school that allow them to succeed academically. This could disproportionately affect students of color who work hard and desire an education, but did not have access to resources during their early schooling that allowed them to succeed at the same rate of their peers. I feel that, overall, this is a complex situation full of nuance and needs to be treated as such."
