☝️ Have the 1st Amendment apply to social media sites (23%) – "The first amendment provides specific protections, and these should be enough. As a society we need to be able to hear and read ideas that we don't agree with, without those ideas immediately being labeled as bad or wrong. The first amendment provides enough protection from the most dangerous forms of speech. Everyone just needs to grow up and get used to civil disagreements."
⚖️ Hold tech companies legally liable for extremist content (27%) – "When discussions of free speech and censorship arise, I will always refer to the late great Karl Popper and his description of the "Paradox of Tolerance". While Popper would have welcomed and defended the concept of free speech, he described how (if left unchecked), the -IN-tolerant will inevitably rise up and consume the tolerant. Thus, intolerant speech and actions must have some sort of limitation in order for a just society to endure and thrive. That said, we have to find a reasonable way to regulate extremist speech online, and I feel that social media companies are the ones who should be held accountable from a top-down perspective regarding the behavior of their users."
👌 Do nothing, Section 230 works fine as it is (17%) – "Given the First Amendment's protection of all types of speech, it should be up to consumers of information to "vote with their eyeballs", and support (or not) speakers on social media. And by extension, social media companies should be allowed to court those "voters" as they see fit, by whatever level of moderation they choose to practice."
🌐 Create an independent, third-party judiciary to oversee moderation disputes, similar to real-life (22%) – "With the influence that social media now holds over our beliefs, it’s incredibly important to have non-partisan groups overseeing content control. It’s far too easy for a platform to manipulate what does and does not get seen."
🤷♀️ Other/unsure (11%) – "The best (and most practical) way to handle this would be to have legal guidelines for restriction and each app would have to put in their own restrictions (and form of restrictions) and as long as it held up to the legal guidelines, it would be good."
