👍 Good idea (12%) – "As long as it is being used for purposes of finding criminals, missing children, exonerating the innocent, etc, I am perfectly fine with it."
📈 Mostly good idea (27%) – "There may be some inaccuracies – and this should be taken into account when using video surveillance as evidence in a trial. However, for the most part, the technology seems like a good way to stop crime. I don’t think it should be used to send a ticket in the mail when it catches someone jaywalking, but it should be used as evidence in serious criminal cases. Let’s not forgot this could as easily exonerate as it could incriminate."
📉 Mostly bad idea (23%) – "Until police departments are willing to have some accountability to the public, they cannot be trusted with more technology and data that makes it easier for them to track people. There have been too many abuses in the past, any new technology should have a thorough citizen review before implementation."
👎 Bad idea (22%) – "I believe it violates due process and doesn't allow the accused to confront his accuser. When suspects chosen by facial recognition are interrogated, they frequently don't understand the statistical nature of the technology and its shortcomings (including the limitations of the training sets used). It is less accurate than a polygraph, which is no longer admissible evidence for most courts and less transparent than DNA analysis because the recognition algorithms are almost always proprietary trade secrets. It is, in short, witchcraft disguised as technology and gives law enforcement power without forcing the appropriate responsibility on them to recognize its limitations."
🙅♀️ Change that has no effect (4%) – "When police use facial recognition the criminals will just find a smarter way to combat this. It's a great idea, but when the criminals get their hands on a way to avoid facial recognition it basically causes the thing to become practically useless."
🤷 Unsure/other (12%) – "It’s potentially good, but not until the issues with misidentifying different races are fixed."
