What can be done to reduce the occurrence of mass attacks in America?

"I'd bet my paycheck most of the responses are going to be about guns, but I don't think that's the answer. If people are motivated enough to attack, they're going to do it, and data support that. What's surprising is the statistic that concerning behaviors or communications are not being addressed, and many of these are likely coming from the 96% of male attackers, over half of whom likely have mental health symptoms. Are men with mental health symptoms not taken seriously when they send out a cry for help, on purpose or otherwise, until they hurt someone?! THAT is an issue."

  • "We must have common sense gun reform. Most responsible gun owners agree that it is not too much to ask that all gun owners receive training - like a driver’s license - and must register all weapons in their possession. It also seems reasonable to have a maximum number of firearms allowable. Other countries have poverty, domestic violence, and mental health issues. No other country has as many guns in homes as we do."

"Once an individual has made threatening or concerning statements against others they should not be allowed to have any weapons in their possession and should be watched by law enforcement. We need to be better at diagnosing and providing treatment for mental illnesses. Family members should be held responsible if they know that their relative has mental illness or is a threat and they do not report it."

  • "Hold the firearms manufacturers responsible just like in the tobacco class action lawsuits and make it illegal for gun companies to lobby and donate to political campaigns. After those measures are taken, pass common sense gun legislation."

“We NEED to work on our mental health situation. After working in a mental health office as an admin I can tell you the following with confidence: There aren’t enough therapists for the needs in the US. There are too many people who do not know how to access mental health. There aren’t enough affordable mental options for lower-income Americans. There’s also too much negative stigma around mental health.”

  • “Better healthcare (especially mental health) and better education would go a long way to helping this problem. The solution isn’t gun control, although it’s not a bad idea, because it doesn’t address the root problem. Men are already sick and damaged by the time they go on a rampage, better to try to improve outcomes at an early age.”

“I wish the answer was gun control but obviously illegal guns and nefarious people will always exist. The best thing we can do is have better mental health screening and affordable care. Even with insurance it is unattainable for many.”

  • “The amount of guns, types of guns, and access to guns is absolutely ludicrous in this country, especially when an unprecedented number of people are struggling with mental health issues. Get rid of the assault weapons. Make gun owning incredibly difficult. Severely punish those whose carelessness permits adults and minors who shouldn’t have access to guns do harm to others. And provide more mental health support to everyone.”
