👍 Strongly agree (17%) – "I’ve been a teacher for 20 years. I was always taught that we were to be impartial. Our job was to teach students how to think, not what to think. Every time there has been an uproar about standards or curriculum, I would tell parents they were overreacting. We were still teaching kids how to think, not what to think, until recently. Suddenly, standards ARE being jammed with politics. As a moderate Democrat, I am not on board with what we are being asked to do in schools. My job is not to push an agenda on students."
📈 Agree/Somewhat Agree (17%) – "When I look at the list of topics that are now suggested but not required, I think College Board made the right call. They have a history of offering courses that try to be politically neutral, balancing sources from both left- and right- leaning thinkers."
🤷 Neutral (11%) – "In the end, it is an elective. If you choose to study something out of a need of confirmation into your own bias/belief system, you should be able to look into it all you want, so long as you are not hurting anyone or distributing any form of radical prejudice upon society as a means to promote violence or hate upon any group of people."
📉 Disagree/Somewhat disagree (21%) – "I think College Board took a progressive step in the right direction by adding this course, yet by changing so many aspects of it I struggle to see what is left. I hope that they were honest in saying politics did not influence this decision because race is already much too political. As someone taking 4 AP courses this year I've seen many faults of College Board, and I hope this doesn't add to it."
👎 Strongly disagree (34%) – "The parts of the curriculum that they removed are some of the most important aspects of Black history. How are they going to teach about African American studies without mentioning how Black people are impacted today? How are they going to teach African American studies without mentioning the women, authors, and queer people that made huge moves forward? How are they not going to mention the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the most important and global movements of the past one-hundred years? Reparations are also a super important topic within American history and is still relevant today."
