Do you support the Biden admin's plan to cancel some federal student-loan debt?

👍 Yes (46%) – "The amount of people in debt who are struggling to pay it off (especially with the interest rates) should not be as high as it is. Even forgiving $10,000 per person will be massively beneficial to a lot of people, and for many people, it will pay off their loans entirely."

  • "The group that benefits the most from this are TEACHERS. We don’t pay them enough, but we expect them to have equal or more education than many in the legal, tech and medical field. It cost to much to not pay our teachers. People are not going into the field at the same rate as 20 years ago."

"I always hear the argument of how much this will cost. $400 billion over the next ten years? The government collects $5 TRILLION a year in income taxes. We see very little public benefits for living in the richest country in the world. The US government should have never been involved in the loan business in the first place. They have single handily inflated the cost of education and now they are paying for it. This is a drop in the bucket for them anyways."

  • "Republicans have supported car company and bank bailouts, corn and other farm subsidies, and tax breaks for small businesses, all of which are paid for by tax payers. This is just political maneuvering. I was pushed to go to the college because it was the "right" thing to do, and I worked all through college and still can't pay off my debt. If this doesn't happen, I will never be able to afford a house, and I've been working since I was 12 years old. Something has to change."

👎 No (42%) – "Anyone who chooses to take on debt has the responsibility to pay it back, that’s taught in Life 101. Choosing to take on debt for higher education, which should be preparing one to earn sufficient money to meet and exceed personal responsibilities, is certainly not a choice of necessity. There are the options of choosing a more affordable school, waiting and working to save enough, and working while you’re in school to pay as you go. If there’s a group that you should forgive debt, this isn’t the one."

  • "It's not in his power to do so, and I think they knew that all along. It's inherently unfair to far too many people. A better solution would be to limit the amount of interest that these companies are permitted to charge on student loans. That would be more equitable."

"A debt is an obligation made by adults. It is a contract. It is a choice. Our collective tax dollars should not be used to forgive these obligations. Where does it end? What about my mortgage or auto loan? Educational choice is no different than any other choice. If I can't afford to pay back a debt I should not sign the loan obligation. Also, what about my loans paid many years ago or the more recent school loans that my children took (and paid off)?"

  • "It's a loan! You agree to pay it back when you sign for it. Tens of millions of people pay off their loans. It took me 15 years living at just above poverty level with a job to do it – but I did! Forgiving loans after someone has tried for many years and made the payments is one thing, but to just wipe it away is stealing from all of us who are working so hard and will have to pay for it in our taxes."

🤷 Unsure/other (12%) – "I think it's partially a good idea, but the $125,000 threshold is too high. My partner and I paid off our loans making less than $40,000 per year."

  • "I totally agree with loan forgiveness up to the amounts proposed; however, I don't think using covid as a reason to offer that forgiveness made sense."

"We should be canceling ALL student loan debt, not just some, based on certain parameters. If we want people to attend college, we have to make tuition free. At this point it is too cost-prohibitive for all but the most elite."
