In general, how do you feel about using nuclear energy as a source of electricity in the US?

👍 Strongly agree (43%) – "The technology has come a very long way since things like Chernobyl and we are even finding ways to use nuclear waste for power too. Even though there are hazards, it seems the "cleanest" way to meet our electrical needs and protect our environment from CO2 emissions."

  • "There are dangers with nuclear energy as well as challenges with the waste. But most of the fears of the general public are grossly exaggerated because of the word nuclear and the associations it has. Ultimately it’s a very clean source of energy and more widespread adoption will help lead to further advances in safety and in disposal of waste."

"It’s obviously the most viable energy solution. Meltdowns are extremely rare, especially in newer facilities. Europe already has fully functional nuclear facilities that produce almost zero waste. Yes it has high operating cost, because it creates great jobs. Nuclear power plants produce some of the highest paying, no degree required, jobs out there. Not to mention, it takes up a very limited space unlike solar energy. Doesn’t affect wild life to the degree of wind farms. It’s a great solution."

  • "Nuclear is many times cleaner than any other massive-scale energy source, and is more scalable than almost any other source. The safety concerns surrounding nuclear are massively overblown and all of the incidents where power plants became dangerous were extremely flukey and/or caused by massive natural disasters."

📈 Agree/Somewhat agree (26%) – "Nuclear power has so many advantages, particularly for the carbon footprint/global warming crisis. BUT... there are so many problems that still need to be addressed, that they are impractical in this moment. But perhaps not in the future."

  • "Despite the consequences of nuclear options, it’s high time we did something about the CO2 emissions we’ve exerted for centuries. Nothing comes without risks, but when we compare the good against the bad, what do we have to lose?"

🤷 Neutral (10%) – "I would like to see scientists come up with more solutions to key problems with nuclear, like disposing of radioactive waste, before pushing for more fission plants around the country."

📉 Disagree/Somewhat disagree (13%) – "I don't know if the potential dangers outweigh the "good" parts of nuclear power. It feels like a distraction from getting renewables up and running."

👎 Strongly disagree (8%) – "A potential meltdown on the scale of Chernobyl or Fukushima would be catastrophic to the US. There are better and safer alternatives for renewable energy in my opinion."
