Do you agree with the task force’s recommendations for reparations to Black California residents?

👍 Yes (24%) – "We can not move forward from institutional and systemic racism until we repair as much of the real harm done as possible. Taking accountability is supposed to be uncomfortable, even painful. I’m proud of California for doing this difficult work."

  • "Discrimination in the Black community is so present, it's not something that was so far-away, it is something that this generation continues to suffer, so it is important that they receive some type of acknowledgement/help – and in their lifetimes, too."

👎 No (58%) – "Its a precedent that will be marked by prejudice. How do you give reparations to one community and not others that were treated unfairly. Irish were one of the first immigrants brought over as indentured laborers. We took most of the American land away from indigenous people. I can continue to site examples, but I saw "no" to reparations and move on with a better plan of inclusion."

  • "If you start doing reparations in this country, we will go broke, the black population was not the only one who suffered abuse and discrimination through the years. American-Japanese for example, in the second world war,the government seized all their properties and put them in concentration camps. And this just happened 80 years ago. You keep digging in our history and you will need to pay more reparations."
  • "The harm done to Black Americans is disgusting and caused much devastation. However, crippling our state budget is not the answer. We are the one of the most taxed state, and this is make it worse. I would love to see an economic report that looks into the economic impact that these reparations will have in the community and in the state. Will the state just be handing out checks or will there be stipulations with the money? Could the state instead offer each Black American to attend college or a trade school for free? I think we need to continue to look at all avenues of compensation, but also be honest about how much we as a state can afford."
  • "You can't ask the current generation to pay for things that happened in the past. Every race and nationality has committed atrocities in the past if you go back far enough. It would be better to spend the $800 billion on current issues and focus on how to correct them."

🤷 Unsure/other (18%) – "Reparations are a great first step! I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of economic costs for the modern era as well. The biggest issue is to revamp the current legislature and police forces to eliminate the racial bias in the first place along with investment in poorer black communities. Free access to financial literacy, education, and other tools would also be impactful. Incorporating voices from local communities on the needs for the local communities will be necessary as well. The reality is a resolution this aggressive will likely not pass in its current form, nor does it address current issues."
