Overall, which side do you agree with more in the ongoing debt ceiling negotiations?

🔴 Republicans (47%) – "We MUST stop spending like there’s no tomorrow. Our next four generations will be paying this debt. The Federal government wastes so much of our money on unnecessary spending. It’s time to rein it in."

  • "Think of your own budget - when you're in debt above your ability to pay, facing personal bankruptcy or the inability to feed or house your kids, the logical option is NOT JUST to call the credit card companies to get more money. You also need a plan in place to stop your toxic spending habits that got you in this situation in the first place. Same with the government. There needs to be a plan to reduce spending overall."
  • "Why keep spending waaaaay more money than we have. There is checks and balances for a reason. America needs to reign in the spending no matter what party is in power."
  • "Unrestricted spending is not sustainable or responsible. Both parties should support that. Healthy citizens that are able should be willing to contribute some time if they need government assistance, and elected representatives need to stop wasting money!"

🔵 Democrats (37%) – "The spending that they are arguing about was passed by mainly bipartisan legislation. The Republican House majority is very narrow (4 votes). They should not have the power to undo spending bills that were passed on bipartisan basis."

  • "I don't think the budget talks should hold the debt ceiling hostage, and republicans voted easily to pass the ceiling increase under Trump. I didn't like when dems held it hostage before, either."
  • "Every year, the budget is agreed upon by Congress before being passed. This means that everyone involved knows what's in the budget, what the costs are, and what the obligations are. You cannot agree to a budget and then change your mind after the bill comes due. Historically, this is what a GOP majority Congress does, only when there's a Democrat President in office. When there's a Republican President, they're happy to allow the deficit to spiral out of control. This is extortion, and the losers in this scam are average Americans."

🤷 Unsure/other (16%) – "I'm divided on which side I support. Obviously, the debt ceiling needs to be raised and we also need to cut back on our spending as a nation. You can't simply continue to spend more money without reducing your expenditures. However, I don't necessarily agree with how Republicans want to cut spending."
