In general, how do you feel about the practice of tipping?

👍 Positive (26%) – "In general, I do agree employers should pay their employees a living wage – which they often don't these days – but no matter WHAT the employer pays, tipping gives the customer a say on how well the employee is doing."

  • "I think that tipping could better someone’s day or even make a difference in their struggle in getting by. Either way I think it’s worth it. Even a small tip could give someone motivation. And maybe it also keeps delivery services from eating or spitting in my food. For the most part it doesn’t harm me so it’s definitely worth it to possibly brighten someone’s day."

👎 Negative (47%) – "Why can't workers just be paid what they are worth in that position? Why does that lack of salary get put onto the customer's shoulders to bear? Why am I expected to make up the difference? I don't have a problem tipping for exceptional service, but I don't like that it is now widely expected that I *have* to.. and it must be at a large percentage. That's just corporate greed at work."

  • "My biggest problem with it is that the restaurant business is the only one that can get away with paying their workers less than minimum wage and get away with it since the general public are expected to make up the rest plus some. I would prefer that just be figured into the cost of food; however, it’s so engrained in our society that I don’t think that would work as a benefit to the workers. We need to be more like Europe in this aspect."

"Charge me what it costs and pay the people the full wage. Having come up in food service jobs, I know the jobs suck. But by the same token if a meal should cost me more then tell me. I will decide whether to eat that meal or not."

  • "Tipping should be used to appreciate someone who's given you quality, in-person customer service. Being prompted with a tip screen--often in absurd increments of 20/25/30%--when you order at the counter or buy a bottle of water at the airport, for example, leaves the customer feeling guilty if they DON'T tip but just adds extra cost to the item(s) without the benefit of extra service. I'd rather see employers pay their workers fairly, even if it means the listed cost has to increase, so that I can choose whether or not I can afford to patronize a business and never again have to endure the awkward interaction with every swipe of my card."

↔️ Neutral (27%) – "Tipping can be an excuse for employers to not pay them as much, but it can also be used as a way for the recipients of the tippers to benefit from providing good customer service. If they do a better job, they get paid for it."

  • "With recent wage increases in the service industry, tipping should be re-examined. We tipped for good service when we knew they were making a low minimum wage. If they are making $15-20 an hour, should we be tipping? I enjoy rewarding someone who has given me good service with extra cash, but don't trick me into giving you more, especially with inflated food prices."
