Do you agree with the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in college admissions?

👍 Yes (45%) – "I don’t think college admission should be based off of race and I would hope that those admitted would have similar feelings - that their admission is based off their work and effort leading up to applying for college. I do however believe that there is a need for our k-12 education to be improved so that the types of education is comparable across the country."

  • "Poverty is a much higher indicator of overcoming difficulties than any other indicator. As it stands, according to the data obtained during the case, in the event of an African American student who came from a wealthy background pitted against an Asian American student from a poor background for admission with all other admission factors being equal, the African American student would receive the nod every time by a significant margin."

"Diversity comes in all forms - it isn't just race. At the collegiate level, we should be the first to understand that. Setting some students on the shoulders of others through no effort of their own for entry into a system that is based on merit and hard work is one of the most backwards things we've ever established for our educational system. There is a better, different solution out there we haven't found yet. Affirmative action isn't it."

  • "Colleges should not be asking about a students' race, nation of origin, gender or sexual preference because none of those things help determine who is the most qualified to be admitted to the college. The applications should be completely blind to prevent any and all types of discrimination. Racism is not just towards one specific race."

👎 No (36%) – "While times may be changing, a college degree has been a way for marginalized people to elevate their standing. In a country of inequality, specifically race based inequality, we should embrace rules that may seem unequal, as long as these rules are set up to resolve the inequality. Affirmative action shouldn’t be necessary, and should be eliminated when equality is reached - but we aren’t there yet."

  • "Racial balance at universities and in the workplace is vital to end hate and fear of others who are different than ourselves, but still entitled to equal opportunities to seek higher education, employment and even attain a mortgage. This ruling will have long reaching consequences."

"Affirmative action is an aid to bring diversity to elite schools. This does not mean that a black or latino/hispanic person will get into that school just because of their race. It means that the school acknowledges that their background is different from that of their white or asian american counterparts, and that they have worked harder than others to get to the same place."

🤷 Unsure/other (19%) – "I understand the need for enabling people without means to pursue better opportunities, and how the legacy of our past perpetuates inequalities in the present that affirmative action attempted to reconcile. However discriminating against Asian people by reducing their score weights seems incredibly discriminatory as well. It’s not as if Asian Americans haven’t had their fair share of discrimination in this country. Ultimately, I hope that the future of educational assistance gets people in poverty the assistance they require."
