Would you be in favor of enacting a maximum age limit for elected US officials?

👍 Yes (84%) – "Absolutely we need an age limit. Career politicians are making it difficult to move forward in government and create new opportunities for others. Some Congress members do “retire” when they know they can no longer perform their responsibilities, but many push it too far and it is detrimental to their constituents and the country alike."

  • "Unfortunately most older elected officials are unwilling to graciously give up their power, so we should enact a maximum age limit. After all, if a minimum age limit to make sure a person is old enough to do their job is fair, so is a maximum limit to make sure they are young enough to do their job."

"Mental decline is a real thing. We are seeing it with Biden and we're seeing it with other senators. It's for the good of the country to have a max age. I wouldn't want a doctor who gets confused while making a diagnosis or a lawyer who freezes mid-argument."

  • "I find it troubling that the retirement age is 65, and there are plenty of situations where employees are pushed out/forced to retire around that age to make room for younger employees. Yet, in government positions, we don’t currently pay attention to the retirement age. I can acknowledge that there is some aspect of ageism in setting maximum age limits, and that is a valid argument since plenty of people are capable of working and contributing well past 65. However, members of Congress are making major decisions that impact the lives of all Americans."

"I personally think there should be an age limit because of the fact that not only can people’s health issues cause them to struggle to function, but I don’t want people who could die any day now to make decisions that’ll affect the future and younger generations."

👎 No (9%) – "Age isn't the problem. There are many competent people into their early 100's. The problem is the career politician. The longer you hold office, the greater the likelihood that the system will corrupt you. We need term limits just like the presidency."

🤷 Unsure/other (7%) – "I think instead of having a maximum age there should be a mental capacity requirement. Some people can be perfectly healthy and able to serve at 80 something while others lose their mental capacity at 60. If they can effectively serve and they keep getting elected, I don’t see why they shouldn’t!
