In general, do you support investing based on ESG considerations?

👍 Yes (38%) – "Climate change is going to affect the world in massive ways from here on. Might as well support responsible companies in that realm as well as others which attempt to make the world a better place"

  • "Companies that eschew ESG are burying their heads in the sand and ignoring the huge problems and vast amounts of money that issues like climate change will require. Not just to deal with the issues, but to clean up the aftermath of hurricanes, wildfires, drought, etc."

"i feel like attention should be brought to the problems in our enviorment and investing should still be done, but more research should go into it."

👎 No (40%) – "ESG investing is not what it’s cracked up to be. If you want to make an environmental difference, you are better off investing in the non-ESG companies so that they may spend money on environmental improvements. If you want make an impact, find the dirty companies that are committed to environmental improvement and invest in them."

  • "Investors should be looking at issues that directly impact returns first, and consider ESG as a secondary consideration, and a 'nice to have'."

"Hiring for diversity itself is insulting to minorities. They aren’t any dumber than the rest of us, they don’t need help securing those jobs. And for the environmental part, it is absolutely impossible to track. Companies will buy carbon credits off farmers, so they don’t need to change their operations to have less impact on the environment."

  • "Fund Managers that place ESG goals above profit goals will always earn less than those who don't. Investors who choose ESG-minded Funds are opting for less return for their capital. I choose to maximize my ROI; I'll find other ways to support ESG goals."

🤷 Unsure/other (22%) – "I'd much prefer to invest in a company with an achievable, concrete goal of, for example, rehabilitating prairie and natural grasslands in their community (actionable and worthwhile) over a company with every corporate environmental buzzword in their announcements."

  • "I fully support the ideals behind ESG initiatives. But these statistics confirm my suspicions that the vast majority of corporations who tout progressive and socially responsible values are only attempting to seduce a progressive consumer base with a bunch of sexy, empty promises. Which, morally speaking, might actually make them worse than the companies who openly reject these values. At least they're being honest about it."
