In your opinion, what steps should the US take to reduce the amount of suicides among its population?

  • "I think we have a crisis in mental health as evidenced by this topic as well as school shootings. Not that I’m an advocate for the days when people with mental illness were locked away, but it seems that today, people are given a medicine and sent on their way. There should be more avenues for people in extreme danger (to themselves or others) to get the help they need, even if it means a stay in a facility."

"I don’t know of a perfect solution. I’m not qualified to give one of those anyway. But I think we should all be more kind to one another. Treat one another as if they were family. Because we are one. Stop all the division. We are all one people and we should treat each other with love first."

  • "I know it sounds crazy, but it could be our diet as Americans? The rest of the world seems to not have the same crappy food issues we do. Why is McDonald’s so much better in France than it is in America? Diet seems to be linked to so many things mental health could just be one more link in the chain."

"This is not so much a government problem as much as a societal problem. In my opinion, toxic masculinity is one of the biggest underlying factors. Our culture needs to stop talking about "men being men", normalize EVERYONE in society being empathetic, and allow anyone to ask for help without feeling shame. The government can support this by making mental health care affordable and accessible, reducing access to deadly weapons (firearms are involved in over 50% of suicides), and regulating social media to reduce bullying and harassment."

  • "This is not something the government can control. Suicide is an individual choice, and there are a myriad of reasons why it happens, so pinning down a reason to try to fix the issue is impossible. It is up to us as individuals to pay attention and try to get help for those friends and family who seem to be in need."

"Universal healthcare including psychiatric healthcare. The reason older people kill themselves is they don’t want to bankrupt their families with their care. Younger people often don’t have access to insurance and so can’t afford to seek help."

  • “Start a health campaign that rewards spending time off line and away from social media; advertise resources for free mental health care and make insurance companies cover it in basic policies; and work on improving the economy, which is a major stressor towards suicide.”

“Transition to government-run free healthcare that also includes mental, dental, and eye care. We are the only 1st world nation without it, and one hospital visit even with insurance can bankrupt anyone.”

  • “Expand mental health services and make them accessible. Support the professionals who do this type of work. Benefits should be true benefits and not the kind with all of the stipulations and loopholes, and everyone should have the same baseline package.”
