Do you think a military conflict will occur in space, or on the Moon/Mars, within the next 30 years?

👍 Yes (47%) – "The mood in the world today is not too accommodating and does not seem to value working together- not much trust to go around. Greed and egos getting in the way!"

  • "Conflict doesn't necessarily mean violence or some kind of "hot" war or skirmish. Conflict also materializes in the form of spying, espionage and sabotage. Every super power in the world is already doing that here on Earth. And because building military, communication, intelligence and spying infrastructure in space is going to become a necessity for every paranoid super power in existence, it is an unquestionable inevitability that conflict will arise on that frontier as well."

"International tensions remain high in the world today, and if they keep rising like they are now, it's only a matter of time before one nation jumps the gun and creates a chain reaction. I'm personally hoping that it never comes to that, but given the rivalries between multiple countries ongoing now, it certainly isn't out of the discussion later down the line."

👎 No (38%) – "I think it's highly unlikely. When countries truly want to incite violence on another, they want to inflict the most damage possible and that is usually by targeting large populations of people. Unless space is fully inhabited within the next 30 years, I doubt there will be any military conflict. It's an expensive endeavor versus what they can accomplish much cheaper on Earth."

"Countries have proved that they cannot economically compete with private companies in space. They may be the only paying customers for space transport but I think we will have our first McDonalds on the moon before a war on the moon."

🤷 Unsure/other (15%) – "I don’t think there’s a straightforward prediction within the next thirty years, but it’s possible with the peculiarity of some countries. There are more factors to consider, such as economic interests, international relations, political motives, and how each country has differing technologies that could either support or disjoint the rest. We don’t know if that will change in five years, ten, twenty, etc. It could be worse than just space conflict, or it could even be nothing at all."
