👍 Yes (71%) – "As an independent voter in NY I am shut out of the primary process, yet joining one of the parties just to participate is not something I am willing to do. There is nothing in the constitution about political parties, it seems to be just another way that the rich and powerful divide and conquer America."
"Yes a million times yes. I am have no party affiliation and I want to stay that way. Which means I cannot vote in primaries unless I chose Democrat or republican. I would rather miss the primary than align myself with either. However, exactly as stated here, the candidates tend to be so extreme and this seems like such a common sense solution that has the potential to make a big difference and get a more accurate consensus of the American peoples opinion."
"All our current voting process does is incentivize candidates to push extremism through their campaigns. This is incredibly dangerous to the American people and new voters need just as much of a voice as older ones."
👎 No (15%) – "Primaries are closed because they are the method by which party members choose their representative/s. A sports team wouldn’t ask ALL managers to choose their roster, and Republicans or Democrats should not have to be subject to outsiders picking theirs. I appreciate people want to increase voting and engagement— so do I. But those seeking reform should look elsewhere, like to campaign finance reform, moving to ranked choice voting, or easing standards for entry of third party candidates."
🤷 Unsure/other (14%) – "I think it should go farther and we should adopt a nonpartisan RANKED CHOICE ballot. This way you can vote for any political party, and can rank your vote out (or just vote for a single person). If the top choice doesn't get enough votes, your vote goes to your next choice, and so on. This would solve so many of the hyperpartisan issues we currently see plaguing America."
