Do you agree with the Biden admin’s new guidelines making it easier for student loans to be discharged through bankruptcy?

👍 Yes (35%) – "The cost of a college education has sky rocketed. The salaries offered cannot cover the cost of loans and rent, groceries, transportation etc.. We want our own to be educated. Something needs to be done about the cost of an education."

  • "I think it is valid if you truly are in that much debt. It is up to the borrower to be responsible with this change and ONLY do it if it is a need."

"Many people got sucked into predatory school loans for all sorts of reasons. Including being convinced a degree from a stupidly expensive university would help them be successful. Before bankruptcy is allowed the parameters must be met."

👎 No (51%) – "A small portion of graduates can afford university; that’s the real problem—college COSTS too much. With the ability to eliminate student loan debt, it’s creating a cycle of years of financial (and emotional stress) for those who barely get by AND those who have to work their tails off to make ends meet. College just needs to be more accessible to all!"

  • "No, this hurts all of us. The best way to deal with the student loan issue is to 1) counsel people that no one owes you the live on campus college dream. You can get the same education from a local college and 2) deal with the predatory lending rates. Cap them at a manageable percent so that students have the ability to pay them back without them ballooning to untenable amounts."

"Students and their families have an inherent responsibility to take their education finances seriously and not exceed their means. The problem with this change to bankruptcy law is that it encourages individuals to behave poorly and take out more in loans than they can afford, since they know that once they graduate they can simply have those debts erased. Since the students are early in their careers they will have time to overcome the negative impact to their credit rating that goes with bankruptcy, and the benefit of being debt free will greatly outweigh that temporary penalty."

  • "Student loan forgiveness should be no strings attached. Now we have to file for bankruptcy? Which is a complicated process that will have ramifications on our credit and financial situations for years? No way."

"People should honor contracts that the enter in to. If the cost of tuition is the real issue, and not people just trying to get out of their obligation, then education institutions should make tuition more affordable by taking less profits. Taxpayers should not carry the burden of someone else's debt, which I think will ultimately happen if loans are not paid back."

🤷 Unsure/other (14%) – "The improvements to the policies surround federal student loans are definitely welcome, but it still feels like a band-aid to a much larger issue with our education and student loan system. I don't want this policy change to end up being the best we can do as a nation to improve our student loan crisis. Ideally, the system shouldn't even be putting people in the kind of situation where they need to file bankruptcy on education. Overall just disappointing. We can do so much better."
