In your opinion, is AI development moving too fast?

👍 Yes (62%) – "We are heading for "law of unintended consequences" outcome, but on a level not yet seen due to both the capabilities of AI and the certainty that it will be exploited for nefarious purposes."

  • "Education, business, and economics will not be able to pivot fast enough the way that AI is changing each of these landscapes. We blinked and AI has taken half of our brain capabilities and left them useless."

"There appear to be no "stops" built in to development or deployment of a technology which can, potentially, cause harm. Similar to new chemicals that come on the market whose effects on the environment are discovered after it is too late to mitigate the effects (PFAS come to mind). While I typically engage in new technologies, this one has me putting on the brakes."

  • "It's understandable that AI wasn't taken as seriously when it was first introduced to reality, since we associate it with the far flung stories of science fiction. But now that it's real, we need to treat it as a real thing and make sure that we are taking genuine precautions to ensure that it is used properly and accordingly, rather than jumping the gun and throwing it out carelessly. That can include laws, restrictions, whatever the case to make sure it doesn't harm anyone, whether it be through job layoffs or the spread of misinformation with scams. AI COULD be the future, but only if we learn to press the brakes once in a while instead of keeping our foot on the gas pedal."

"Honestly, AI is starting to freak me out. It's so easy now to put a fake person on the internet and pass it off as someone real to put out misinformation. I'm also freaked out by AI in robots, I mean just this week LG released a home robot that you can conversate with. Am I the only one weirded out by that??"

  • "Not enough protocols have been put into place to avoid an AI catastrophe. All we need is some random programmer in their basement creating an AI that takes over the world through some accidentally misplaced line of code"

👎 No (17%) – "I don’t think it’s necessarily moving to quickly so much as there will be kinks to work out along the way. Am I nervous about some of the possible outcomes with AI, of course. I think everyone is. But I’m also excited to see what innovations come from this technology."

  • "Society in general seems to be hesitant to adopt new technology that they can't fully understand, but that doesn't mean it is bad. The more effort we put into AI development and sooner, the more we can understand how it can be used to augment, not replace, the human experience and find solutions to the scenarios where bad actors will try to use it for self-serving or nefarious purposes. In my opinion, the rewards far outweigh the risks."

🤷 Unsure/other (21%) – "To be honest, I really do not know much about AI and have not had the bandwidth to dive into it to see what all the fuss about except for the news stories that pop up. Also, in HR, I work in a people field and I hope it stays that way."

  • "Too many variables to assess. Proper oversight would likely lead to positive outcomes, but this is not guaranteed."
