In general, do you support the current state of the gig work economy?

👍 Yes (34%) – "It's a great example of free markets working out. Decent product for consumers. Drivers can go do something else if they have better opportunities elsewhere."

  • "Welcome to the world of an entrepreneur, running your own business. There are no guarantees, but the freedom (and hard work) it offers has to be worth it to you. If you want more and consistent pay with benefits, there are a whole bunch of traditional jobs available. If you've got one, try a second one or quit whining."

"Keeping drivers classified as independent contractors makes sense - they are paid by project (delivery of person or item), not time; the company does not reimburse expenses like gas/mileage, etc.; and equipment used for the job is provided by the person completing the project, not the company. If people want to enter into a contract with a company like Uber/Lyft/DoorDash, I don't think they would like the oversight measures needed to be put into place to ensure work is being done how and when the company says it should be; companies have a right to define, track, and record those things if people are truly employees."

👎 No (33%) – "People deserve to be compensated fairly for their work. Unfortunately these companies will use this strike to pass more costs on to the consumer, likely with a notification in their app citing the need to pay their workers as the driver of increased prices."

  • "Because the drivers deserve better. I asked one time how much my driver was getting paid from the run. He was getting $3.50, I was paying $10+ dollars for that run. Uber is taking all of that money away from us and most of us don't even realize."

"17.1% increase is too low and gig drivers can't make ends meet for college and retirement. They get paid chicken feed. Uber drivers are good decent and honest people. They don't deserve to be treated like Oliver Twist."

🤷 Unsure/other (33%) – "As a minor, this doesn’t really affect me, so I’ve never looked into this stuff. It seems like the drivers might have a point, but if they already earn $30 an hour? And they get to choose their own schedules? I don’t really feel like that kind of freedom comes without a few drawbacks. It was their choice to work for Lift, Uber, or whatever else."

  • "The market is what the market is. I'd rather ask the question how we got to a position in society where we have so many people dependent on delivering food/shopping for others in order to feed, clothe, and house themselves. Delivery has generally never been a good wage earning job. Having 100,00+ people working in a field with volatile demand doesn't seem smart if we as a society want to have as many citizens as we can be financially stable."

"Morally speaking. I support unionization and workers getting their fair share. But, this to me is kind of like streaming services bundling their packages together. It makes me think ‘isn’t this what we had before’? If these services increase in price, why did we get rid of taxis? There has to be a middle ground somewhere but I’m not gonna be the one to find it."
