Do you think a four-day workweek will ever become commonplace in America?

👍 Yes (34%) – "I think we have so much burnout and fatigue that many companies will naturally shift to a four-day work week just to keep their work force. The Army National Guard already has a four-day work week and so many people tried to get ARNG jobs that they had to put down tougher restrictions. I think there would be companies that wouldn't go into a four-day because of the nature of the industry, like with restaurants. But if the government tries to force this, then companies are going to put their heels down over it because that's how human nature works."

"Nearly all studies on this subject have shown an increase in worker satisfaction and work efficiency. GDP may go down as more people will have time to: cook for themselves over getting fast food, choose low cost leisure activities (hiking, parks, reading), rest and be healthier (less money spent on cold and flu OTCs); but GDP was never a measure of human happiness. An economy cannot grow infinitely on a finite planet."

  • "I don’t think it will be soon, but as other western countries continue to switch to this model, the US will be left behind. I believe a four day work model would be more widely adopted after it’s become common place in Europe and Canada."

👎 No (47%) – "In some industries, that would work just fine. In others - industry, for example - output is tied directly to time spent. There are many, many problems to overcome to implement such a thing, and public support isn't there to force those solutions."

  • "I don't see how Bernie can say this because it will require many more people in many industries like retail, hospitality, and food services. How will these companies absorb the added costs? The only way to do that is to increase the price of what they are selling and then people won't be able to afford it. This incessant mantra against "greedy" corporations is getting out of hand because this sort of proposal will effect every business, large and small. This type of thinking destroys small companies because they can't absorb the financial hit like a large corporation."

"I don’t think congress can ever agree to pass this bill. These types of workplace changes need to be left to the companies and industries where a four day work week would not interrupt services/goods these companies offer."

  • "Not going to happen in the USA. There is no way employers will accept fewer hours for the same pay. I work in the consulting industry where we bill hours, and fewer hours for us means less revenue, unless we raise rates to offset the loss, but I anticipate clients will not accept higher rates to comply with the law. Plus, the IT industry notoriously under estimates the amount of time a software implementation will take. As it is, people work many hours of overtime to get a project done on time; having one less day is not going to be popular, and there will be massive nonconformance with this law. Sure, this sounds nice in theory, but in practice I just don’t think it’ll be accepted by most employers."

"While I agree with most of the reasons and tenants on the value of a 4-day work week, I don't see it as a standard enforced by law. There are too many variables - many cited by the opponents. Many companies will (and many already have) offer this as an alternative work schedule, separate from any labor laws."

🤷 Unsure/other (19%) – "I would love to see a 4-day workweek. The benefits, including better mental & physical health and wellness, not to mention higher worker productivity & satisfaction, outweigh any downsides. But I’m not sure it will ever happen in my lifetime because society is slow to change and corporate America always will put profits over people."

  • "One thing to consider is those in the service industry/healthcare who work weekends. We get weekend package pay (or should be). I've been paid up to 30% more an hour for working Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Changing to a 4 day work week would add an extra day to my weekend package. Which means a lot of places would be paying more wages, and that gets passed on to the consumer."
