Do you agree with the Biden admin’s new plan to forgive an unspecified amount of student loan debt for American borrowers who meet specific criteria?

👍 Yes (38%) – "This is one of the only "forgiveness" programs that actually help the people, not big banks, big businesses or big industries which only continue to help the already wealthy or the poor.. This is pretty much the only thing out there right now helping the middle class."

  • "Education should not cost as much as it does. Educated people give back far more than they take from society. They tend to be healthier, earn more, and cost less as citizens. The inane and very uniquely American idea that a student should impoverish themselves to get an education is barbaric and anachronistic."

"Everyone with student loan debt could be spending those payments on food, better housing, saving for a vacation, retirement or a child’s education. College costs are out of control, let’s forgive some of the crazy debts and inject that money into the economy."

👎 No (49%) – "Government should stay out of student loans. Government is already too big and should shrink and spend less. Our politicians (all of them) don’t know how to balance a budget and inflation is a result of this bad business. This spending will be far worse for us in the future."

  • "I think that this is slightly more palatable than his primary plan, but I still think that people made decisions to borrow money for school. It was their decision. They entered an agreement. I think a far better plan would be to address the issue of predatory lending moving forward. Cap the acceptable percent for interest, and educate high school students on finances, mandating courses that explain options for higher education, including in-state schools and/or commuting."

"You borrow it, you pay it back just like the hundreds of thousands that went before you. Maybe universities will have to start providing value. The burden is on the universities not the taxpayers that made better choices."

  • "They are not fixing the source of the problem. If they were to forgive over priced loans that can never get paid off and stop them from reoccurring then great but to spend ½ a trillion dollars and not fix the problem is fiscally irresponsible."

"The debt doesn't get cancelled. It gets passed on to everyone else. To people who saved to put their kids through school, to people who put themselves through school or paid off their loan, or to people who didn't go to college because it would've been financially irresponsible. The people who took out the loans made a commitment to pay it back, they have to honor that deal."

🤷 Unsure/other (13%) – "On the one hand, the way student loans are set up -- with interest accruing daily instead of monthly like other loans -- is horrible and Congress really needs to change that. It feels icky that they haven't. On the other hand, sometimes paying off loans takes sacrifice -- it can mean living more simply, resisting lifestyle inflation, and being content with less so that you can make larger payments and get those loans paid down instead of making minimum payments forever. I know many people who *could* pay off their loans, they just don't want to and are holding out for loan forgiveness."
