In general, how do you want your state to handle abortion?

Enact strict abortion restrictions (17%) – "Except for victims of rape, abortion should be illegal, especially after the first trimester. You have autonomy over your body, but you don't have the right to kill other human beings, be it inside the womb or not."

  • "Abortion should not be a method of birth control. Statistics show that the percentage of abortions due to rape, incest and life of mother is very small and while I think these cases should have the exception in abortion legislation, it saddens me to see the lack of focus on pregnancy prevention. People, both male and female, need to be accountable for their choices and will all the birth control options available now there really isn't a justifiable reason for so many abortions."

Establish strong abortion rights (50%) – "Medical decisions should be made by patients and doctors. Period, end of story. This should apply to women and men. Every person deserves the right to control their own bodies and forcing women to carry a fetus with a birth defect to term is cruel and inhumane."

  • "Women’s rights shouldn’t be in the hands of straight white men that have no knowledge of female reproductive organs and their health. The argument against abortion is too deeply rooted in religion to be involved in politics. If we want a health government that can protects all types of people, religion should be the last thing snaking its way into politicians decisions. Abortion is a form of healthcare. It should not be banned for the sake of one demographic’s views on a topic they know nothing about."

"My body, my choice. The government has no place in decisions regarding my healthcare; body autonomy. If the genders were reversed you can be assured men would not allow the government to police their healthcare."

  • "As someone who was one of those women whose first pregnancy ended up with the baby being diagnosed with a fatal abnormality that wasn’t found until after 20 weeks, I can tell you that people think they know what they believe but until you are in that situation you have no idea. There is no reason for somebody other than a doctor to be involved in a situation like that. It’s already emotionally, physically, and mentally taxing and adding political restrictions to that is an unnecessary additional burden."

"I keep hearing Trump say he took abortion rights away from the federal government and gave it to the states where people want it to be. I feel like he took abortion rights away from every woman in the country and put it in the hands of government. Abortion decisions were between a woman and her doctor and that is where I think they should be. No one should have control over your body, other than yourself. I am a 65-year-old white male that has been a registered Republican for over 45 years and anyone with a lick of common sense should be able see that forcing a woman to have a baby that they do not want is a big mistake and forcing a woman to carry an unwanted child to term is just a form or torture."

Something in the middle (21%) – "I don't know why our political sides are so extreme now. No, you shouldn't be able to at will have an abortion up until birth, but yes, of course you should have access to healthcare and termination within a reasonable period, say 12 weeks, unless there are issues with the health of the baby or mother. It's pretty simple, really."

  • "I think abortion is a very nuanced issue that often gets misrepresented. I believe that *elective* abortions should not be available to be used as a form of birth control so I'd like to see stricter or more clearly defined regulations. However, I also think it is critically important to make clear the difference between elective procedures and medically necessary procedures. This would come in the nuance of definitions around what "medically necessary" means, or how other extenuating circumstances (e.g. rape, incest, known birth defects, etc.) might be considered. For me, the bottom line is elective abortions should be heavily restricted. There should be no restriction on medically necessary procedures to save the life of the mother that result in the loss of the baby, and there should be considerations for other unusual extenuating circumstances."

Unsure/other (12%) – "The options you gave display inherent bias. "Strict" & "restrictions" have negative connotations; "strong" & "rights" have positive ones. Regardless of my opinions on this topic, I was disappointed to see a famously non-partisan news source display this bias. Neither side is deliberately evil or "the enemy." The people that make up each side of this debate are trying to find the best solution to an exceedingly difficult situation. Wording like this only serves to further widen an unnecessary chasm."
