Have you ever lied to someone close to you about your vote in an election?

Yes (11%) – "I recently switched to independent, after being a lifelong Democrat. They have gone too far left and no longer reflect my values. I lied to my husband, he is republican. I didn’t want him to gloat when I voted for Trump in 2020."

No (89%) – "I have family and friends on both sides of the aisle. We may disagree politically but respect each other's opinions."

  • "I don’t think we should choose friends or lose family members based on how we vote. If someone chooses not to be friends with me or if a family member decides not to communicate with me any longer, that’s their problem, not mine. I view this attitude of “I’m right, you’re wrong” as very un-American. This country was born on the premise of exchanging ideas and working together for a better tomorrow, not on one party or the other, take it or leave it. I vote the way I do based on my understanding of what the candidates will do but my view may be all wrong and so could yours. If we all just take a deep breath and work together, life will be so much better."

"Realize that to ask someone who they voted for is just as rude as asking someone their age or weight. It is none of your business. That applies to close family members as well."

  • "All things done in secret eventually come to light. If you are so ashamed of your choices that you feel you need to lie about it, don't make them. Choose wisely"

"There would be no point in lying - I consider myself a pretty consistent person, although not very outspoken on political topics. That said, it only takes about 2 minutes of talking about hot-button issues to decipher where someone falls on the political or social spectrum and it's probably quicker with me. It would be very difficult for me to lie to people who know me - first, because it doesn't sit right with my moral compass - but also because I live in a way that reflects my values and supports my opinions on important topics."

  • "Most people don’t blatantly ask who you voted for - at least not to me, but I either answer honestly if I know the person is not hostile, or I tell them I don't discuss politics."

"Who I vote for is personal and confidential. If asked, I will say I voted, but not for whom. It's not their business nor is it their right to know."
