In general, do you prefer the Republican Party of today, or the GOP of previous decades?

Republicans today (36%) – "The Republican party of today seems to be more proactive on addressing things that actually affect Americans, versus a bunch of purely political initatives that no one ever finds out about or feels the impact of. Americans are calling for change and the Republicans recently have been rising to the challenge."

  • "They are more representative of mainstream views than the ultra conservatives of the past. They still maintain a conservative platform of common sense that the Democratic Party lost after Clinton’s presidency."

"I'm an independent who voted Right in this election. I do not consider myself conservative and I'm quite liberal socially, including reproductive and LGBTQ rights. However, I do strongly prefer a small government, less spending, and certainly less of the hate that has been promoted by the left in recent years. It is this dismissiveness and anger towards white men in particular that prevented me from voting Left. That, combined the victim mentality, big spending, and hyper-focus on very small populations of people over the well-being of the public at large has made me question if I would ever vote Left again."

  • "My political views are most closely aligned with the Libertarian party, although I maintain an independent status. I perceive that the Republicans are moving much closer to Libertarian ideology - more individual and states' rights, less foreign intervention, and more government accountability (with the DOGE) to name some of their biggest shifts. They've made such a radical change that even though I've always voted for the Libertarian presidential candidate, I voted for Trump this time."

Republicans in previous decades (43%) – "I prefer my old Republican Party because the strong stances were in most cases coupled with some sense of compassion. The truth is the Republican Party is gone - and maybe forever. A person adept at manipulating facts (some might say a liar) seized on a moment in history when Americans were dissatisfied with the status quo. We’ll get to see how they do. Maybe they’ll truly be wonderful for the country and even show a little compassion. And we’ll still have a two party system. They’ll just be called Democrats and MAGA for the foreseeable future."

  • "The Republicans of today seem less cohesive and not a unified front. They seem to only be loyal to Trump, not any ideals or the principles this country was founded in. Giving a president immunity is too king-like and against the freedoms they fought for. it sets a dangerous precedent that may change democracy forever. Republicans used to be against government being involved in every aspect of your lives but now they want to tell parents how to raise their children, how teachers should teach, control of women's bodies, and soon what food we can and cannot eat."

"The US spending is ludicrous, and the national debt has serious impacts. Abortion should not be a right. With rising world tensions, it is the worst time to be questioning military aid or spending."

  • "Republicans of the past were a bit more fiscally conservative and culturally moral than those of today. What the really need is real alternatives to spending on 'giveaway programs' like Medicare (perhaps something following the health care of government workers to start the phase out) and Social Security (something patterned after the government workers TSP retirement fund). The debt is truly out of hand and it needs to change before we become the Weimar Republic and need wheel barrows instead of wallets and purses."

Unsure/other (21%) – "A lot of these issues are so complex (economics and foreign policy especially) that I dislike any position that implies a one-size-fits-all solution. Why do parties paint things as if tariffs were always bad or always good, as if being involved on the international stage is always bad or always good? They communicate like that because it's easier to tell a convincing story to voters when it's simple, but life isn't simple. The truth of the matter is that each of these issues is complex and nuanced depending on the individual situation. If the GOP is able to lean into more nuance because of these changes, then it might be a net win. But if it's just a swing to a different point of view, I'm going to need to really see how to plays out before I can confidently say I like or dislike the changes."
